83.5cm blade by G.Kenning, London, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow, etched with scrolls, crowned VR cypher, slung bugle horn, and presentation inscription, silver plated steel gothic hilt incorporating slung bugle horn, wire bound fish skin grip, in its plated steel scabbard, two suspension rings.

  • The inscription reads: Presented to Major Alfred Ferguson by the officer's, Non-Commissioned officer's & Privates of the 4th (Bebington) Company 1st Cheshire Rifle Volunteers, on his Promotion after a service of 22 years, as a tribute of their high esteem, in warm appreciation of the admirable manner in which he commanded the company during the ten years of his Capataincy.

    Alfred Ferguson. Ensign 4th (Bebbington) Cheshire RVs 25 May 1868 Lieut 27 December 1869 Captain 1 February 1873 Major 29 October 1881. retires in late 1883.
