A 1828 Pattern Scottish Officer's Basket Hilted Broadsword
79.5cm double fullered blade, etched with thistles, crowned VR cypher and 'Norman A Jarvie, Captain, 4th Ban., Highland Light Infantry, South Africa, 1899 -1900', regulation plated steel basket hilt, wire bound fish skin covered grip, in steel scabbard, two suspension rings, complete with its crimson faced buff leather liner, and fringe tassel.

Footnotes

  • Norman Alexander Jarvie, was born in Glasgow 14 February 1872 and commissioned into the 3rd battalion HLI in 1895. He served with the 4th battalion and later with the 1st battalion in South Africa during the Boer War. He is noted on the medal roll as 'on black list' and 'removed from the army'. The London Gazette confirms 'retired from the Militia, dated 17 November 1900'.
