Printed souvenir of the 1739-1740 Frost Fair on the Thames, single sheet, six lines of verse within a woodcut border, the date set-up day by day (below the verse) and the name and birthday of the recipient ("Mary Ord. born June the 20th 1731") set in the blank area above the verse, sheet size 210 x 160mm., pasted onto the detached board of a 1721 edition of the Book of Common Prayer (with folding maps), folio, 'Printed on the River of Thames, January the 24th, 1739-40'

  • SCARCE EPHEMERA PRINTED ON THE RIVER THAMES. There were about nine frost fairs on the Thames between 1608 and 1814, including the long-lasting one of 1683-84, described by John Evelyn, and at which similar souvenirs were printed on the ice by Croom.
