CHURCH ARCHITECTURE
Hints to Church Wardens, with a Few Illustrations, Relative to the Repair and Improvement of Parish Churches, first edition, 12 hand-coloured engraved plates, contemporary calf gilt, rebacked preserving original spine, 8vo, Rodwell and Martin, 1825

Footnotes

  • An exceedingly scathing satirical attack on the poverty of the "improvements" made to churches by church wardens, those "excellent planners, classical architects, and most preserving promoters of solidity". For example in answer to "How to ornament the Top... of a Tower belonging to an ancient church" he suggests "Place on each Battlement, vases, candle-sticks, and pine-apples, alternately, and the effect will be striking... [and], if any one would wish to distinguish his year in office, perhaps he would do it brilliantly by painting them all bright red".
