A Victorian cameo brooch
The oval shell cameo carved to depict Athena, Greek goddess of War, with helmet, shield and spear, her body clothed in a war tunic and the Aegis, her shield with wreath and owl attributes, to a tubular mount applied with foliate engraved ribbon scrolls, length 7cm.

  • In Greek mythology the Aegis was a goatskin shield belonging to Athena's father Zeus, King of Olympus, which bore the head of the Gorgon Medusa to ward off evil.
