This bronze was originally one of a pair of figures with a pendant male figure holding a staff and a marrow. Earlier examples dating back to the late 17th century are known although the present example is more likely to date from the 18th century. An earlier version of this figure with its male counterpart was offered for sale in these rooms on 11 December 2007, lot 524.
