Footnotes

  • A presentation copy of The Princess, based on the ideal of university education for women, given by Tennyson to the author Mary Howitt (1799-1888). In her autobiography she recalled that in December, 1846 "The retiring and meditative young poet, Alfred Tennyson, visited us, and charmed our seclusion by the recitation of his exquisite poetry... we seemed to have known him for years. So, in fact, we had for his poetry was himself...". Howitt's Ballads and other Poems was published in 1847, the same year as The Princess.
