ROSS (ALEXANDER)
Virgilii evangelisantis Christiados libri XIII. In quibus omnia quae de Domino nostro Iesu Christo in utroque Testamento, vel dicta vel praedicta sunt, altisona divina Maronis tuba suavissime decantantur, emblematic engraved title by William Marshal depicting Virgil in the guise of an angel with trumpet (printed title cancelled as often), numerous early annotations on preliminary blanks, contemporary limp vellum gilt, panelled sides with central Tudor rose emblems surmounted by a crown, spine gilt in compartments with sun tools, slightly soiled and cockled, wants ties, cords of upper hinge broken (but textblock secure), 8vo, Richard Thrale, 1638

Footnotes

  • An attractive copy - with an unusually late use of a Tudor rose tool on the binding - of this work in Virgilian verse, which relates the principal Biblical events from the death of Abel to the ascension of Christ. Ross is probably best remembered for his translation from the French of the Koran, the first version in English.
