The latticed back above a slip-in hide covered seat, on square legs united by an 'H' stretcher, signed and dated 1937, with 4 further oak examples from the early 1950s, signed and dated 'J.Swalwell 1953'; 'R.Wharton'; 'D.Rawlinson 1952' and 'P.H.M.Williams 1952', most lacking seats (5)

  • These chairs are likely to have been made by students of William Alexander Wallis Elloway, a tutor in the creative design department of what is now Loughbrough University, from about 1952 until circa 1983. He specialised in cabinet making and joinery and was good friends with Ernest Barnsley.
