87cm unfullered blade by Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London, numbered 12733 for 1863, etched for virtually its entire length with foliate scrolls and strapwork, circular panels of roses thistles and shamrocks, the Arms of York, crowned regimental badge and title, crossed cannon and regimental motto, arms crest and motto of the recipient and presentation inscription, silver gilt gothic hilt incorporating the regimental badge and title within a wreath of acorns and oak leaves, the interior of the guard finely engraved with foliate scrolls and the regimental badge and motto, the back piece also engraved with foliate scrolls, silver wire bound fish skin grip, in its silver gilt scabbard with two suspension rings, the hilt and scabbard both hallmarked London 1863 and maker's mark R.H. for Richard Hennell, contained in its brass bound walnut case, the close fitted interior lined in purple velvet, the lid with large circular gilt escutcheon engraved with arms crest and motto of the recipient.

  • The inscription reads: Presented to Colonel The Right Honourable Lord Londesborough on His Marriage by Major Brooshooft and Officer's of the 4th East York Artillery Volunteers as a mark of their esteem and regard. Hull, 10th September. 1863.

    William Henry Forester Denison, 1st Earl of Londesborough 1834-1900. Married to Lady Edith Frances Wilhelmina Somerset on September 10th 1863. He was a member of various volunteer organisations, was Vice-Admiral of the Yorkshire coast and a member of Parliament. It was remarked in his funeral notice in The London Times that as per his request, his casket was borne by fishermen.
