A 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer's Sabre
79cm blade signed Osborne Warranted on the back edge, and etched, blued and gilt with foliage, crowned GR cypher, Royal Arms and owner's arms, crest, motto and initials 'C.H.', regulation steel stirrup hilt with faceted back piece, wire bound leather covered grip, in its steel scabbard engraved Johnston Sword Cutler 8 Newcastle Strand, two suspension rings.


  • The sword of: Charles Herries, London and Westminster Light Horse Volunteers. Appointed one of the three Captains Commanding upon the regiment's revival 16th May 1794, (the regiment was initially raised 1779, and served until 1783 during the American Revolutionary War), and Lieutenant Colonel Commandant 17th December the same year. Colonel 19th July 1797. He held this position until his death 3 April 1819, aged 73. He was accorded a full military Funeral with his beloved Regiment in attendance. He is buried in the nave of Westminster Abbey, and by the door in the West Cloister is an inscribed marble monument by the sculptor Francis Chantrey.
