Footnotes

  • Provenance: Previously used to furnish the private offices of the Mackintosh toffee factory in Halifax and are thought to have been acquired by either the self styled toffee king John Mackintosh (1868-1920) or by one his sons. Although he started working in the mills at the age of only ten Mackintosh and his wife Violet opened a pastry shop in Halifax. They quickly saw the demand for a sweet delicacy and devised a new recipe for a chewy toffee based on the traditional brittle English toffee and the more soft creamy toffee from America. The couple went on to found the world famous John Mackintosh & Sons confectionary business. When John Died suddenly in 1920, the business was taken over by his son Harold Mackintosh, 1st Viscount Mackintosh of Halifax (1891-1964). In 1969, Mackintosh's merged with rival Rowntree to form Rowntree Mackintosh, which merged with Nestlé in 1988.
