83cm blade by J.J. Runkel Solingen with broad fuller and double-edged towards the point, etched and gilt with scrolls, stands of arms, pre-1801 arms and crowned GR cypher against a blued ground, gilt stirrup hilt with horse head pommel, and lion mask langets, wire bound ivory grip, in its gilt brass scabbard engraved with foliage, crossed lances, a shieled within a trophy of arms bearing the inscription 'Presented by the Fingal Yeoman Cavalry to Hans Hamilton Esqr their Captain and a Testimony of the Confidence and Attachment on ye 15th Novr 1800', the reverse signed within a foliate cartouche Archer King's Cutler Dublin. (Hilt distorted and grip split and chipped)


  • The Fingal Cavalry was raised in 1796 under the command of Captain Hans Hamilton M.P. for Dublin, and stood down in 1801. Re-raised 27th August 1803 as the Fingal Cavalry 1st and 2nd Troops with Hans Hamilton Captain Commandant of both troops. A family of importance since the early 17th century, Hans Hamilton was M.P. for Dublin for 30 years. He died in 1822.
