- Josephine Butler (1828-1906) was a pioneering campaigner for the rights of women and children, especially the vulnerable who found themselves trapped in the cycle of prostitution. Believing that "economics lie at the very root of practical morality", she worked tirelessly to persuade Parliament and the public to develop a more comprehensive and practical understanding of the effect of prostitution on all facets of society.
She headed the campaign against the Contagious Diseases Acts of the 1860s and was also instrumental in persuading Parliament, in 1885, to raise the age of consent from 13 to 16 in an attempt to curb child prostitution. She was also one of the founding members of the International Abolitionist Federation which fought against the trafficking of women and children.
This collection is being sold for the benefit of the Josephine Butler Educational Trust, established by the Josephine Butler Society. The Society continues the work begun by Josephine Butler 150 years ago. It works actively to prevent the exploitation of prostitutes and marginalisation of those who can be forced into this activity by poverty and abuse and presses for these problems to be addressed through changes in the law.
