Footnotes

  • Anne was the second daughter of King Frederick II of Denmark and Queen Consort to James VI of Scotland (I of England and Ireland). Anne and James married in 1589 when Anne was just fourteen years of age. She gave birth to seven children who survived birth, four of whom died during their infancy. Her second son succeeded James as King Charles I.

Whilst it is said that a mutual respect and a certain degree of affection survived between Anne and James, the frictions that arose early on in their marriage resulted in their living apart and a battle for custody of their first born child, Henry, who died at the age of eighteen. Anne's independent patronage of the arts meanwhile enabled her to create a magnificent court, playing host to one of the richest cultural salons in Europe.
