Footnotes

  • Chris Conn was a works rider for Norton motorcycles during the heyday of racing in the 1960's. He competed at circuits around the UK and world against legends such as Giacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood (see photograph of the three of them together)

He competed in the 1962 Singapore Grand Prix on a Norton Manx 500cc but had to drop out due to heat exhaustion. That particular race was won by Teisuke Tanaka on a Honda. Undeterred but facing another 7000 mile journey East, he returned the following year and took part in the fantastic and gruelling 1963 Grand Prix. That year Chris managed to overcome the extreme heat over the 180 mile distance by famously 'inserting ice cubes into his jacket' and in his own words, "having a bit of luck on his side" he finished in first place, beating the Japanese rider Fumio Ito on a works Yamaha.

This current watch was presented to Chris Conn by Rolex for wining the 1963 Malaysia Grand Prix and is inscribed on the case back, 'PRESENTED BY ROLEX TO C.R.CONN. MALAYSIA GRAND PRIX 1963' The watch still retains its original dial which has aged to a light blue colour. It is further highlighted with a fantastic provenance and photos of Chris Conn been presented the trophy for wining the 1963 Grand Prix, making this a very rare and desirable example for Rolex and racing enthusiasts.
