Admiral Kennedy, 1862-1939, educated at Uppington and Royal Academy, commanded battlecruiser HMS Indomitable between 1912-1916. During this time the ship participated in the shadowing, chase and escape of the German battlecruiser Goeben and its companion ship Breslau by the British Mediterranean Fleet in August 1914. It was also involved in the bombardment of the Dardanelles during November 1914, the Battle of Dogger Bank January 1915, the sinking of the German battlecruiser Blucher and towed home Vice Admiral Sir David Beatty's disabled Flagship HMS Lion. At the Battle of Jutland, May 1916, Kennedy assumed command of 3 Battlecruiser Squadron following the death of Rear Admiral the Honourable Sir Horace Hood.

He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1916 in charge of Peterhead area off east coast of Scotland from 1917-1919, to Vice Admiral in 1920 and finally Admiral in 1925.
