An interesting ivory chess set,
English, circa 1800,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with multi-knopped columns, queens with ball finials, bishops with ovoid shaped mitres, knights as arched horses' heads, rooks as raised turrets with battlements and spires, pawns with multi-knopped columns, sold with a Victorian red leather dispatch box, gilt-tooled and bearing the Royal Coat of Arms (scuffed and worn),
the king 10cm high, the pawn 4.5cm high, the dispatch box 31.5cm wide (2).
