An ivory chess set,
English, early/mid 19th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with mult-knopped columns and crowns, queens similar but of smaller size and with ball finials, bishops as mitres, knights as carved horses' heads with flared nostrils, rooks as tapering turrets with finials, pawns with urn shaped columns and ball finials, sold with an attractive Japanese bamboo box, the lid decorated with an exotic bird and foliage,
the king 10cm high, the pawn 5.5cm high (2).
