An ivory chess set,
English, circa 1860,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, the chessmen of multi-knopped form, kings with inverted urn-shaped finials, queens with large reeded ball knops, bishops with open mitres, knights as carved horses' heads with manes and black eyes, rooks as turrets with battlements, pawns with knops and reeded ball finials (some chipping in places), in a wooden box with a hinged lid,
the king 11cm high, the pawn 4.5cm high.
