Footnotes

  • Each card in Wallis's New Game of Historical Pope Joan carries a portrait of an English monarch from William the Conqueror to George IV. An early edition of this game was published in 1811 and, obviously, didn't include the George IV card (which notes his death as 1830).

The "Historical Memento..." game is a teaching aid for children at the end of the eighteenth century. The game consists of 43 numbered cards containing a biographical profile of the English monarchs from Alfred the Great to George III. Teachers were encouraged to "make the subject of any card, lately committed to memory, that of conversation with the pupil". The cards were to be had "only of Mrs. Haugh, Doncaster, and Mrs. Hoole, by whom they were compiled".

Provenance: from the collection of the late John Hayter.
