Footnotes

  • Provenance: from the collection of the late John Hayter.

An early advertising pack, the subject of research by John Hayter. See: The Playing Card, Volume XXVIII, No. 2, John Hayter, "Taking the 'waters of Ambert' too literally: a very early advertising deck". Eau D' Ambert was a medicinal remedy taken in France at the end of the nineteenth century. It was supposed to have been made by the monks of Ambert, but as John discovered, this was pure fiction.
