An Indian Export ivory chess set,
probably Vizagapatam, circa 1840,
one side stained brick red, the other side left natural, king with pierced tops and surmounted with crosses, queens with pierced crowns, bishops with mitres, knights as carved horses' heads, rooks as squat turrets with brickwork and flags, pawns with baluster knops,
the king 10.6cm high, the pawn 5cm high.
