An Indian Export ivory chess set,
Berhampur, early/mid 19th century,
one side stained brick red, the other side left natural, kings and queens with elaborately carved foliate decoration and feathered knops, bishops as pierced mitres, knights as horses' heads, rooks as monobloc turrets with battlements and spikes or guns (two white flags missing), the pawns with foliate decoration (one white pawn base replaced),
the king 11cm high, the pawn 5.5cm high.
