A "Pepys" ivory chess set,
Vizagapatam, India, early/mid 19th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with galleries and spire finials, queens similar but of smaller size, bishops with pierced mitres, knights as horses' heads, rooks as raised turrets (lacking flags), pawns with spire finials, in a 19th century banded mahogany box,
the king 14.5cm high, the pawn 5.1cm high, the box 32cm wide (2).
