A Chinese Export ivory chess set,
Canton, early/mid 19th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings and queens as Emperors and Empresses, bishops as mandarins, knights as horsemen, rooks as elephants with turrets bearing flags (the white flags as Union Jacks), white pawns as Chinese foot soldiers bearing swords, red pawns wearing caps and bearing muskets, (some swords missing),
the king 11cm high, the pawn 4.6cm high.
