A Chinese Export ivory figural chess set,
Canton, early/mid 19th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings and queens as Chinese Emperor and Empress, red Empress holding a basket of flowers, bishops as mandarins holding fans, knights as horsemen, rooks as cannons with flags and foot soldier bearing a shield, pawns as foot soldiers with swords, spears or arquebus, with a giltwood and green felt velvet covered presentation stand, "ebonised" wooden base and glass dome,
the king 11.6cm high, the pawn 5.3cm high, the base 62.5cm wide, the glass dome 45cm high.
