A John Cuff Cuf-type brass compound microscope, English, circa 1750,
signed on the stage CUFF MAKER LONDON and on the side of the pillar Jo Jackson LOND, of standard Cuff construction with Bonanni sprung stage, milled screw fine focusing, plain reflector, on mahogany base with drawer fitted with six numbered objectives, fish plate, live box and stage condenser, in pillar mahogany case with brass loop handle, the microscope 14in (36cm) high

Footnotes

  • Joseph Jackson was apprenticed to Thomas Heath in 1723 and is recorded as having a workshop on the Strand, London from 1735 until 1760. As this microscope is engraved with his name as well as Cuff's, it can be assumed that he retailed the instrument.
