An Early Brass-Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss
The Lock By W. Predden Of London, Late 17th Century
With massive barrel with a ring behind the flared muzzle, the breech (drilled with a hole by the touch-hole) struck with barrelsmith's mark 'HC' and with a ramp at the rear notched to form a back-sight, plain iron tang, associated signed border engraved rounded lock (mainspring missing, cock replaced, steel refaced) retained by three side-nails (one missing), figured full stock (some bruising and minor damage, fore-stock repaired along one side) with apron around the barrel tang, butt with brass heel-plate secured by iron tacks, iron trigger-guard with pointed finial, single brass ramrod-pipe, and later wooden ramrod (iron parts with some rust patination), London proof marks

  • William Predden was apprenticed to Harwood Darke and turned over to William Trulock in 1681. He was free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1688 and was elected Master in 1723. He was Contractor to Ordnance between 1693 and 1720, and to the Royal Africa Company from 1701 to 1707
