A Fine German Swept-Hilt Rapier
Circa 1600
With tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section with single fuller on each side of the forte, each flanked by an incised line and stamped 'Ihesns (sic) Maria', rectangular ricasso stamped on each face with two imitation Spanish bladesmith's marks (one similar to the 'P' mark on rapier A644 in the Wallace Collection), russet iron hilt retaining traces of original gilding, composed of slender faceted bars mostly interrupted by spirally fluted knops and comprising long straight quillons with spirally fluted tips, arms, three outer rings, the bottom one filled with a plate cut inside and out with diagonal parallel lines and pierced with rectangles, the top one joined by a curved bar to the knuckle-guard terminating in a spirally fluted tip en suite with the tips of the quillons, inner guard of four merging curved bars also rising to join the knuckle-guard, the quillon-block diagonally ribbed at its centre, vertically fluted tapering barrel-shaped pommel with prominent button, and faceted wooden grip bound with straight and twisted brass wire between Turk's heads
