A Fine North European 'Pappenheim' Rapier With Gilt Hilt
Circa 1630
With slender tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section, each face of the forte with central fuller flanked by a narrow fuller on each side within incised line borders, the outer central fuller stamped 'Heinrich' and the inner one 'Paether', ricasso of rectangular section stamped twice on each face with his mark, iron hilt of flattened bars mainly of triangular section, comprising two ring-guards on each side linked by a short moulded bar of differing design, the bottom guards each framing a plate pierced with numerous rectangles, stars, circles, and pellets (one small loss), the upper guards joined to the knuckle-guard by a swept-up bar, single on the outer side and bifurcated beneath on the inner, downcurved arms, recurved quillons with scrolled 'fish-tail' tips, knuckle-guard with diamond-shaped central feature and small scrolled terminal, fig-shaped pommel with prominent button, and original vertically-grooved wooden grip bound with twisted copper wire between Turk's heads
