A Fine North European Swept-Hilt Rapier
Circa 1610
With slender tapering double-edged blade of slightly hollowed flattened diamond section, ricasso of rectangular section narrowing towards the quillon-block and stamped on each side with the bladesmith's mark, a bow and arrow, symmetrical iron hilt of flattened ovoidal bars comprising straight quillons widening towards the tips, arms linked on the inner and outer side to two concentric side-rings, the upper one joined by a curved bar to the knuckle-guard and by an S-shaped bar to the lower one which is filled on each side by a plate pierced with stars, circles, and crosses, the knuckle-guard (cracked at its base) with ring finial, tall ovoidal pommel with prominent button, and spirally fluted wooden grip bound with straight and twisted brass wire between Turk's heads
