A German (Saxon) 18-Bore Wheel-Lock Sporting Gun
Late 16th Century, The Lock Late 17th Century
With two-stage sighted barrel, long octagonal breech, plain tang, flat lock retained by two screws from the outside and engraved with a stag hunting scene in a landscape, enclosed wheel with integral cover engraved with symmetrical flowering foliage, sprung sliding pan-cover with release button, and cock pierced and engraved with two dragons, dummy side-nails, fruitwood full stock (adapted for the lock) inlaid with shaped white staghorn plaques, those along each side of the fore-stock engraved as addorsed scrolled monster's and cornucopia, the inlay on the club-shaped butt comprising foliate scrolls, some centred on grotesque masks, and triangular panels engraved with scrolling strapwork, all the inlay against a later inlaid ground of white staghorn tendrils (minor losses) and dots within the original staghorn borders, staghorn panels around the barrel tang engraved en suite, at the ramrod-entry a further panel engraved with a helmeted male profile head beneath an arcade, forward ramrod-entry with a perched bird beneath an arcade, engraved white horn butt-plate (split) and mounts, patch-box cover of white horn (rear mount missing) engraved as a sea-monster, contemporary iron trigger-guard indented for the fingers, foliate engraved white horn fore-end cap, and original ramrod with white horn tip engraved en suite
