A Flemish Close-Helmet From A Funerary Achievement
Third Quarter Of The 16th Century
Of iron, with rounded one-piece skull with tall roped comb bordered by an engraved line on each side and with a shallow recess beneath, the comb retaining its spike for the attachment of a funerary crest and secured by a bent staple, beaked visor with curved turned and roped upper edges bordered by a recessed line engraved band, stepped horizontal vision slits with prominent lower edge en suite, and pierced on the right for a lifting-peg (missing), pivoted on a later washer and dome-headed rivet at the same points as the upper-bevor, the latter prow-shaped with recessed turned and roped upper-edge, cut on the right for a lifting-peg, the lower-bevor shaped to be chin and with a locking hook-catch on the right engaging with a pierced stud on the skull, the neck-guard of two overlapping plates front and back, the lower borders with recessed turned and roped edges, and retaining some gilt funerary painting consisting of borders enclosing designs of roundels on the upper-bevor, lower-bevor and front neck-plates (russet overall, some pitting)
