Footnotes

  • The militia battalions were formed in 1726 and, in 1771, were transfered into 47 provincial regiments each of whom were presented with new flags the following year. In 1778 the regiments were transformed into garrison battalions with new flags for each province. In 1791 these provincial troops were all disbanded

The arms are those of Pierre Auguste Alphonese de Civille (1717-1772), chevalier, called 'Marquis de Civille', Seigneur de St. Mars etc., who married, in 1740, Maria Anne de Puysegur (1719-1796), daughter of Jacques de Chastenet, Marquis de Puysegur, and his wife Jeanne Henriette de Fourcy. Following a military career from 1731 until 1748 he was appointed Captain General of the coastguard of Dieppe on its formation in 1756

The Departmental Archives of Seine-Inférieure preserve a document dated 20 November 1756 (a mounted facsimile is offered with the lot), detailing this flag giving its size and the cost of the 'English taffeta' as well as those of the borders, the pole and mounts (now lost, possibly with the regimental titles)
