A Rare English Silver-Hilted Small-Sword
Indistinct London Silver Hallmarks, Maker's Mark Possibly Of Joseph Reason, Late 17th Century
With sharply tapering blade (some pitting) of flattened diamond section stamped with letters and marks within the fuller on both sides of the forte, hilt cast and chased with portrait busts of Roman emperors between cherubs heads on both sides of the shell-guard, quillon-block and globular pommel, the first with moulded borders with central grotesque mask between foliage, the last between acanthus calyxes and with button finial, slender arms, foliate lobed rear quillon with a cherub-mask on each side, knuckle-guard with portrait bust of a Roman emperor on each side, and original wooden grip bound with two thicknesses of twisted silver wire; together with a small rapier possibly for a boy, late 17th century, with tapering blade of flattened oval section stamped with letters and marks within the fuller on both sides of the forte, hilt comprising guard of asymmetrical upturned shells each filled with a plate pierced with numerous small holes, slender quillons with fluted button terminals, arms, fluted quillon-block and ovoidal pommel with button, and later writhen wooden grip (some pitting overall), and a small-sword, early 18th century, with tapering blade of hollow triangular section, characteristic iron hilt, and later writhen wooden grip (pitted overall) (3)
