A German Horseman's Hammer
Probably Saxon, Late 16th/Early 17th Century
Of iron, with hammer-head of tapering circular section encircled by waved lines and balanced by a beak-shaped fluke of square section cut with waved lines en suite, block-shaped socket with button finial, slender haft of tapering circular section becoming square at the base, struck with a mark, cut with waved lines overall and with central moulding, each flat of the base cut with foliage against a hatched ground, disc-shaped hand-guard with triangular 'sword-breaker', compressed globular pommel with button and swelling belt hook both cut with waved lines, and writhen wooden grip bound with twisted wire between Turk's heads
