Two South Indian Katars
Both 18th Century Or Earlier
The first with tapering double-edged blade of diamond section at the point and cut with converging fullers forming a medial ridge on each side, characteristic iron hilt with shaped plates extending over the forte on both sides and chiselled with foliage, tapering hollowed side-bars each pierced with a line of graduated flower-heads, and chiselled foliate grips each with bud-shaped central swelling; the second with tapering blade with waved cutting edges, both sides chiselled with foliage forming panels either side of a central cyprus tree, and characteristic hilt chiselled with foliage (worn and rust patinated) (2)
