A Very Rare Regimental 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer's Sabre Of The 19th Light Dragoons
Circa 1800
With curved fullered blade double-edged towards the point (minor areas of pitting at the point) and etched and gilt against a blued ground on one side with a mounted cavalryman between foliage, and on the other with a trophy of arms and foliage, gilt-copper hilt with squared knuckle-guard, fluted pommel and back-piece, and lozenge-shaped langets, the outer one applied with a crown over 'G.R.' cypher in silver-gilt, the inner one engraved 'XLD' over 'Prince of Wales Own', and fishskin-covered grip bound with twisted copper wire, in original wood-lined brass scabbard with two open elongated oval panels on each side lined with leather and fitted with fluted frog-hook and suspension mounts, the latter each with a ring for suspension

    This sword appears to fill the gap between the so-called coffin pommel sword of 1794 and the 1806 pattern sword which was introduced when the regiment became hussars. There are three similar but more ornate examples in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle
