Footnotes

  • Only three pairs of this distinctive type appear to be recorded. The two other pairs were formerly in the W. Keith Neal Collection and are described and illustrated in Messrs Griffin & Tow and W. Bailes 1740-1790, 1989, respectively pp. 119-124, pls. 54-55. The first pair are now back at Burton Constable Hall, and the second pair were sold at Christie's London, 9 November 2000, lot 205

For a discussion of this type of detachable pan and steel, the purpose of which is obscure, see Jonathon Barrett, 'Six Oddities of English Flintlock Construction', Art, Arms and Armour, vol. I, pp. 393-4. The system was used by at least three leading firms - Twigg, Wogdon and Griffin & Tow
