In her literature, Wendy Baron notes that the present work is 'a meticulous study of buildings in Dieppe set behind structures which were perhaps tents erected for a fair, probably on the open space facing the beach. The tricolour flying from the onion-shaped dome of the Casino towards the left suggests that the scene may represent the 14th of July' (Wendy Baron, Sickert, Paintings and Drawings, Yale University Press, New Haven & London, 2006, p.461).
