Footnotes
John Piper made several trips to Paris during the early 1930s where he visited the studio's of Calder, Brancusi and Arp. This work is likley to date from circa 1934 and clearly shows the influence that these abstract artists had on Piper. Reminiscent of Calder's wire sculptures this lot relates to Pipers few reliefs from 1934 - similar to those held in the Tate collection ('Construction' 1934 - and 'Construction, Intersection' 1934-36).
