Footnotes

  • Louis Stanislas Xavier survived the French Revolution, having fled to The Netherlands and shortly afterwards established himself in exile in Koblenz with his brother, the Comte d'Arthois (see lot 11). With the death of Louis XVI in 1793, followed by that of his son, Louis XVII in 1795, Louis Xavier became the claimant to the French throne, to which he was ultimately to succeed as Louis XVIII in 1814, following the collapse of the Bonapartist regime (with the brief interruption of Napoleon's 'One Hundred Days' the following year).
