Ecce Homo oil on panel 65 x 50.5cm (25 9/16 x 19 7/8in). unframed
The present composition is derived from two works by Andrea Solario: one in the Johnson Collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art; and one in the Museum der Bildenden Künste, Leipzig. These pictures have been dated to the artist's sojourn in France which took place between the early part of 1507 and at least September 1509. This theory is supported by the fact that the Philadelphia picture is, like the present work, painted on an oak panel, not a usual support for an Italian picture. Moreover, both of Solario's pictures have French provenance, as do a number of versions of the composition by as yet unknown French artists of the period (for example, a 16th century copy that was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 30 January, 1998, lot 218; see D. A. Brown, Andrea Solario (Milan, 1987), pp. 212-214, cat. nos. 50 and 51).
