Footnotes

  • The furniture depicted in the present painting is thought to be consistent with that being produced in South Lincolnshire circa 1800. The primitive use of perspective and the mannered poses, influenced by the prevalent style of the mid-18th century embodied in such artists as Arthur Devis (1711-1787), suggests that this was painted by a regional artist unschooled in technical perspective but possessing great skill in the rendering of features and the objects that surround the sitters.
