Circle of Sir Anthony van Dyck (Antwerp 1599-1641 Blackfriars)
Portrait of a Jan van Montfort, bust-length, in a black tunic oil on canvas 49.8 x 40.5cm (19 5/8 x 15 15/16in).
The present portrait is loosely related to the three-quarter-length portrait of Jan van Montfort of 1627/28 in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. A bust-length copy is in the Historische Sammlung Krupp, Essen. Both these paintings differ from the present work in showing the sitter wearing a large ruff collar. Van Monsfort was a sculptor and medallist who was Counsellor and Mintmaster at the Court of the Archduke of Brussels.
