Footnotes

  • A younger brother of Louis XVI and Louis VIII, Charles-Philippe went into exile after the Revolution, travelling first to Savoy, his wife's native country, before joining his brother in Koblenz in 1791 (see footnote to lot 9). Following the death of his brother in 1824 Charles succeeded to the throne as Charles X. The most conservative member of the House of Bourbon, his rule of almost six years ended in the July Revolution of 1830, which resulted in his abdication and the election of Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, as King of the French.
