    Higgs was born near Thaba 'Nchu in the Free State and grew up near the border with Basutoland (Lesotho). Childhood memories of this wonderful landscape, strengthened by a few impressions later in her life, often recur in her painting.

    The present lot dates to circa 1947; the artist also exhibited a number of Basutoland landscapes at her H.A.U.M. exhibition in Cape Town in October 1952.
