Footnotes

  • This was one of the first prints commissioned from Frost by a publisher, the St George's Gallery, and was issued in an edition of 25. It was printed for Robert Erskine by John Watson, a professionally trained printer who taught lithography at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, and exhibited at the St George's Gallery in July 1957, priced at 5 guineas.
'Composition in Red and Black' was another manifestation of Frost's interest in the movement of boats, related to paintings like 'Yellow Verticals' of 1954 (Mayor Gallery no. 8) and 'Untitled Composition', c.1956-7 (Austin/ Desmond no. 29). It was exhibited as no. 370 in the Fifth International Biennial of Contemporary Colour Lithography at the Cincinnati Museum in 1958 (www.Britishmuseum.org)
