    LITERATURE:

'The artist overlooks Lake Nemi and depicts peasants returning after harvesting grapes; the left central foreground is dominated by a 'Madonna and child' figure wearing a large bacchanalian head-dress of vine leaves under which the infant shelters. This figure suggests that his thoughts were still intent on bringing the religious themes of the Old Masters into the Italian countryside; to the right foreground is a donkey with peasants carrying baskets of grapes as they toil up the hill form the lake shore.'
